Altar Servers

This is a volunteer program available to Catholic boys and girls in Grades 4 through 8. Those participating are trained throughout the school year to assist with Sunday and School liturgies and sometimes on other occasions such as weddings, funerals, or for special liturgical events.

Annunciation Roth Youth Choir

The Choir is open to students in Grades 3 through 8 by audition. The Choir performs at the Christmas Pageant, the Spring Concert, First Communion, Confirmation, Graduation, school liturgies and at other events throughout the year. The choir has also recorded several CD’s of their music and led the entire school in performing for Pope Benedict XVI during his 2008 trip to Washington, DC.

Art Show

Annunciation’s Art Show is a school-wide display of students’ work completed throughout the school year. It is held over several days, including weekend hours, so that parents/guardians, families, friends, and parishioners can attend. Some of the recent themes of the Art Show have been: Principles of Art, Elements of Art, Prehistoric and Renaissance Art, 20th Century Artists, the Beatitudes, and Design and Layout, which is used to help students make displays in other subject areas. Teachers’ art work is also displayed.

Band

Annunciation Catholic School participates in the Archdiocesan Music Program. Beginning in Grade 4, students may elect to participate in this instrumental music program for an additional fee. Annunciation has a Beginning Band and an Advanced Band. Both bands perform at the Christmas Pageant and the Spring Concert. For the past three years, Annunciation has received an “Excellent” rating at the Archdiocesan Music Festival.

Black History Month

All students participate in the various activities throughout the month. The activities are organized by the Black History Month Committee composed of parents/guardians. Students are chosen to broadcast historical facts during our morning announcements. There are art and poetry contests. The end of the month assembly features music from our choir, performances by our students, and usually an outside speaker or professional musicians.

CYO Basketball

Boys and girls in Grades 3 through 8 are eligible to participate in CYO basketball. The teams meet weekly for practice beginning in October and are coached by our parents/guardians. The games are scheduled once a week, either Saturday or Sunday, and the season runs until March. The entire school participates in pep rallies.

Drama Club

Drama club meets once a week for one hour after school. This club is open to students in Grades 4 through 8. The Drama Club offers students an opportunity to express themselves artistically through acting exercises, scene performance, improvisations, and dramatic writing. Students actively perform in the Black History Month Assembly and a Spring performance.

Field Day

Field Day is held on the Friday before Memorial Day. All classes participate and parents/guardians are invited to cheer on their children. Throughout the day, all classes compete in various relays. Some of the events include: a suitcase relay, water relay, basketball relay, and a potato sack race. The events are organized and staffed by Grade 8.

Go Green Craft Club

A weekly arts and craft class is held for students in Grades 3 through 8 that follows the three R’s of waste management – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – to create beautiful and useful objects. Utilizing materials collected from students, parents/guardians, and parishioners, crafters learn to create something great out of recycled items. Students have created collage boxes, jewelry, and decorated pens.

Hip Hop Dance

There are two different sessions for dance. One session is for boys and girls in Grades 2 through 4; the other session is for boys and girls in Grades 5 through 8. Each session meets for one hour once a week. These dance classes are a combination of stretching, exercise, dance, and step. Students work on a choreographed dance, which is performed in the spring.

Retreats

Students in Grades 6 through 8 participate in a retreat at the beginning of the school year. This day allows students to see the interconnectedness of God’s creations and develop respect for others. Students have traveled to the Portrait Gallery to view people as God’s creation, the National Gallery to witness God’s creativity, and to the National Arboretum to view God’s creation in nature. Other retreats are held for our Confirmation Candidates and for our Eighth Graders before graduation.

Safety Patrol

Students in Grades 7 and 8 can volunteer to serve on Safety Patrol. Members of the Safety Patrol are on duty before school to help younger students to class and to ensure the safety of all students arriving. After school the Safety Patrol walks younger students to our Extended Day program, helps teachers with carpool dismissal, and maintains order in the hallways and stairways.

School House Rock

Students in Grades 4 through 8 may join this after school program. This musical program meets once a week. Students have an opportunity to be on the crew, play instruments, sing, and write songs. This group effort band has a spring performance.

Science Fair

Science Fair gives students in all grades the opportunity to use the skills they have learned in class. Grades 5 through 8 are judged on their originality, their displays, and their use of the Scientific Method. Some of our award-winning projects have been: “How do different substances decay teeth?”, “How are people influenced by their ancestor’s DNA”, ” Do dog’s react more to sight or smell?”, and “How is a camera like an eye?”.

Spring Concert

The Spring Concert showcases Beginning and Advanced Bands as well as musical performances by each class. Recent themes have been: Gratitude ABC’s, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Peter Pan.

Student Service Council

The Student Service Council is a service-based organization whose mission is to engage students actively in meaningful community service, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Students in Grades 6 through 8 are eligible to be officers and are nominated by other students. Representatives from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 are also selected. This is a student-managed organization that arranges various service projects. Past projects have involved Jump for the Heart, Walk for the Homeless, collecting food for local food banks, and collecting for missions.

Study Hall

Study Hall is a time for students to go to individual teachers for help, to get a head start on homework, to do research in the library, and to organize paperwork. Study Hall is from 2:20-2:45 P.M. four days per week and is scheduled for Grades 5 through 8.

Traditional Christmas Program

All students participate in the Christmas program, which includes musical performances by each class and a Nativity Tableaux by Grade 8. Advanced Band and Beginning Band are also highlighted in this program.

Yearbook

The Yearbook committee is open to all students in Grades 7 and 8. Yearbook meets once a week during Study Hall. Students photograph, do layout, and publish the Yearbook using skills they have learned in computer classes.
